Dalton – GA
Dalton, Georgia, known as Cross Plains until 1947, is the “Carpet Capital of the World” with good reason. Nearly 90% of the functional carpet produced world-wide is produced within a 25 mile radius of Dalton.
The carpet industry began with Catherine Evans Whitener making “candlewick” bedspreads. Orders soon exceeded her capacity and in 1917, she and her family formed Evans Manufacturing Company. Their company’s technology was transferred to carpet manufacture, wall-to-wall carpet became popular, and trains helped supply a customer base accross the U.S.
