Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton was born in 1946 in Sevier County, Tennessee. She was from a family of twelve children.

She reportedly began to make up songs before she could read or write and has since authored more than 300 songs, many based on her memories of growing up in the Smoky Mountains. She learned to play guitar at the age of eight and began to perform and record at eleven. She left her home the day after high school graduation for Nashville and began to have charted hits by twenty one.

She partnered with Porter Waggoner for many years and had 14 top ten hits. She became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1969. She has won numerous awards and starred in several films. She continues to record in a variety of styles from pop to bluegrass.

She owns her own label and television/film production company as well as being the guiding hand behind Dollywood in her native Tennessee. She has been marrried to Carl Dean for many years and sponsors several charities, scholarships, and a literacy program.
