Larry Flynt

Larry Flynt was born in 1942 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, at one time the poorest county in the United States. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade and lied about his age to enlist in the army at 15. Discharged at 17, he lied about his age again to enlist in the navy, then served as a radar technician .

He opened his first club, Hillbilly Haven, in Dayton Ohio and this developed into a chain of strip clubs and adult bookstores. He is known as the head of the Hustler Magazine publishing company but also publishes more than 30 mainstream periodicals. He was the victim of an assassination attempt in 1978 and is paralyzed. He authored a book about his life “”An Unseemly Man: My Life as Pornographer, Pundit, and Social Outcast”” and is the subject of a 1996 Milos Foreman Film that deals with his well known court battles.

Flynt is known on the one hand as a publisher of pornography and on the other as an advocate of the first ammendment. He continues to concern himself with politics and sponsors the Larry Flynt Foundation which supports research dealing with spinal cord injuries, child abuse and violence, and the American Civil Liberties Union.
