Whitten Lock and Dam – MS

The Whitten Lock and Dam is located near Belmont, Mississippi and is part of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (also known as the Tenn-Tom).

The Tenn-Tom connects the Tennessee River and the Tombigbee river through a series of locks and dams, effectively allowing for continuous water transport of cargo from areas along the Tennessee River all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. Conceived during the Colonial period, the project was not actually started until 1972 and took 12 years to complete at a cost of over 2 billion dollars.

The Whitten Lock has a lift of 84 feet, is the 4th highest single lift lock in the nation, and is the northernmost lock in the Tenn-Tom system.
